What Other Governments Are Doing

Region of Halton, Ontario, Canada

Responding to concerns about the potential for costly bathroom repairs by condo owners, the Region of Halton agreed to test the installation of the HydroClean as part of its on-going water efficiency program. The study found that the installation of the HydroClean® toilet fill valve reduced water usage by 36%. In addition, immediately after installing the HydroClean, 100% of the leaks were detected by tenants and fixed by property management with the HydroForce® flapper, bringing the leakage measure of the building to zero.

The study was conducted by Veritec Consulting’s co-principal, Bill Gauley who is the developer of the de facto toilet performance standards for the USEPA’s WaterSense program.

“We chose the HydroClean over a municipal toilet rebate program because it looked easier and less expensive. And it was! We are now saving about 6,340 gallons of water per day for an estimated savings of $1,250 per month in water and sewer costs. Just phenomenal!”
– Fred Harrison, Halton Property Management,
Georgetown Ontario

Cobb County, GA

Facing Level 4 drought conditions, Cobb County’s Water Efficiency Program initiated a 50% rebate program for purchases of the HydroClean toilet fill valve effective June 1, 2008. Because the rebate is available to the management of multi-family buildings and master-metered communities, Cobb County is working closely with Atlanta Apartment Association officials to promote the program. The HydroClean was chosen because of its calibration and leak detection features.

Atlanta, GA

Supplementing its existing toilet rebate program, the Atlanta Watershed Management’s Water Conservation Program purchased 1,500 HydroClean valves to conduct two pilot projects; one helping residents in a 500-unit low-income senior citizen apartment community reduce both their water usage and their bills, and a second project in a 200-unit condo complex. Installation training was provided to local plumbers and city watershed inspectors. Preliminary tests at both locations showed a savings of .5 to .75 gallons per flush. Anticipating the success of the study, water officials are working with commercial organizations and businesses to expand the program.
